Post Script
名古屋にかかわり始めて、今年でもう５年目を迎えた。今日までに日雇い労働者、ホームレスの人達、そして彼らを援助している一般の人々など多くの人と出会った。
写真を撮り始めて世界中を飛び回っていたが、日本国内の問題、特に路上で死んでゆく人達の存在を、名古屋に来るまでは自分の目で見ることはなかった。たまたま名古屋に来て、たまたまホームレスのおじさんと知り合い名古屋通いが始まったわけだが、名古屋に来れば来るほど、写真を撮れば撮るほど、ホームレス問題は根深いものがあるのだと感じる。そして、支援の人がいくら努力しても根本的な解決には至らず、路上で死んでゆく人は決してなくならないのだ。
マスメディアで「自由人」と言われているホームレスは、実際には仕事に不自由し食事にも住居にもありつけない。不安定な雇用形態、高齢化、厳しい生活環境（野宿）、都会の孤独、社会保障の不備など様々な要因が彼らに集中しているという現実がある。
路上で孤独に死んでゆくのは、この日本では人間として最も厳しい死に方ではないだろうか。世界でも最も豊かな国の一つであるはずの我が祖国の冷酷な一面が、彼らに集中しているように思えてならない。と同時に決して他人事ではないのだ。そのことを知るきっかけに本書が役立ってくれればありがたい。
この写真集は、多くの人の協力なしでまとめることはできなかった。撮影させてくれたおっちゃんたち、支援の人達、そして陰ながら応援してくれた福信館の竹谷基神父、炊き出しの人々に、末尾ながら感謝します。ありがとうございました。
I have been travelling around the world taking photos but had not experienced seeing with my own eyes the social problems in Japan, particularly people dying on the streets, until I happened to Nagoya city.
My connection with Nagoya began by a chance visit when by chance met the homeless, but the more I frequent this city, the more photos I take, the more I am made to feel the complexity of this problem. No matter how hard the supporters try, a basic solution is not reached for people still die on the streets.
The homeless, who are called 'the free' by the mass media, are really not free at all - they find difficulty in getting work, food and boarding. It is shameful to call them 'the free'. The problems of uncertain employment, aging of workers, harsh living conditions(sleeping outdoors), loneliness of city life, lack of social securities are some of the problems that are focused on them.
Dying lonely n the street is, I think, the hardest way to die in Japan today.
I cannot but feel that through them we see the coldness of our society that ranks itself at the top for material wealth. This is not a problem, however, that only affects the workers for it concerns all of us and I hope that this photo collection may help the readers to realize this.
This collection owes its completion to many people - the workers who allowed me to take their photos, the supporters, Fr. Takeya of Fukushinkan for his moral support and the volunteers of the meal service. To all, I wish to say 'Thank you very much!'.
